Effective Marketing can be Simple
Wouldn’t it be cool if this blog post could just give you a marketing plan that would be guaranteed to work for your business to ensure it is a raging success in 2020? Yea, I wish it could too, but it can’t because your services and customers and core values are different from mine. So what works for me might not work for you. Just as what works for Kayli would not work for me (but oh man does it work for her!)
Not having a clear marketing plan is like going surfing at a beach a few hours away without a map. Yes, you might make it there eventually but you’ll probably get lost at least once, miss a great opportunity for snacks, and possibly end up at the wrong beach for your needs. It’s much easier to get where you want to be if you:
- Know where you’re going
- Have a clear plan of how to get there.
A marketing plan provides you with both.
Here’s how your marketing plan will help your freelance business grow.

How Your Marketing Plan Will Help Your Freelance Business Grow Faster
Hard work and delivering great results for clients is rarely enough to ensure success, especially when you’re first starting out. You may eventually be able to rely solely on referrals or long-term clients for your business but even amongst veteran freelancers, that’s rare.
Marketing is critical for the success of any business, whether it’s social media, paid ads, SEO, referrals etc, and maybe you’re already marketing your business every day. But are you doing it in the easiest and most effective way possible? Probably not if you don’t have a clear marketing plan.
There are many ways a marketing plan will help your freelance hustle grow, but one of the biggest are:
It Sets Clear Targets for You to Hit
In order to have a marketing plan, you need to have clear goals. Sitting down and defining what you want your business to look like in one year, three years, and five years is a really good practice. Sadly, it’s one many entrepreneurs don’t take the time to do.
Once you have those clear big goals, you can break down the smaller goals and targets you need to hit in order to achieve those goals.
For example: if you want to be earning $20,000/year from your side hustle this year and each project is worth $500-1000, then you need 20-40 projects each year. That means you need 5-10 projects each quarter. Now you can assess if these numbers are realistic or if you need to change something. In this scenario, this could be either your goals or your pricing.
Having clear targets to hit is also useful for regular check-ins along the way. You can check in weekly, monthly, or even quarterly to see if you’re still on track to hit your goals. If not, you can figure out whether it’s time to adjust the goal, the timeline or the steps you need to take along the way.
It Requires You to Think Strategically
A marketing plan forces you to think strategically about your business and keeps you from getting so caught up in the day-to-day that you lose sight of the long-term. To create a marketing plan, you have to figure out exactly who your ideal clients are, how and why your product or service helps them, and how to connect with them on a consistent basis.
It’s not a fun exercise but doing it makes a difference to your business and your bottom line. If you don’t know who you help and how, it’s pretty hard to market to them. Effective marketing will grow your business much faster than the “let’s try everything and see what works” approach.
It Organizes Your Priorities and Time
Having a clear plan means all you have to do is follow it. A good marketing plan lays out not only your big dreams and goals but also the actions you need to take on a weekly (or even daily) basis to get there. You won’t have to sit down every week and worry about what to do because you’ll already know.
All you have to do is follow the plan. Everything is organized sequentially and by importance so your job is just to execute. If you’re looking for a step-by-step way to grow your business, your marketing plan is exactly that.
Because you’ll have such clarity on what your business needs from you in order to grow, you’ll be able to plan your life around it. This means no more “squeezing in the marketing when you have time” (aka: never.) Instead, you’ll be making sure the things that matter happen consistently. This could be your admin, marketing, or even client work.
It Makes You $$$$
When you have clear goals and know exactly what you need to be doing on a day to day basis (and of course, are doing it,) then the money comes easily. Your time and schedule are clearly maintained so you spend your mental energy on what really matters — serving your clients.
Clients love working with freelancers who are professional and have a handle on their business. It means they can rely on you to do what you promise and to deliver when you say you will.
Having a marketing plan you’re executing also means you’re marketing on a regular basis. Marketing has a direct correlation to how much money you make so consistent marketing equals consistent money. We like to make it seem more complicated but it really is that simple.
If you’ve never created a marketing plan before, it can be hard. Having a structured process will make things a lot easier. Yes, it’s a bit of work upfront but over the course of the next year, you’ll save all that time and much more. You’ll also be growing your business with much less headache and stress than you’ve experienced without a marketing plan. You’ve done it the hard way. Maybe 2020 is the year you should try the easy way instead, by picking up our Freelance Marketing Plan + Pitch Pack.
