Gratitude has become a bit of a buzzword these days. With Thanksgiving just around the corner (in the US, we celebrated here in Canda a while ago) everyone seems to be talking about how we should be feeling grateful and giving thanks. You might be feeling a little over the gratitude trend with all the screen time it’s getting lately (#BLESSED), but it’s still an important practice that we should be incorporating into our lives.
Now I’m not here to tell you how to go about writing in your gratitude journal to improve your life – I’ll leave that to Marie Forleo. I’m talking about showing our gratitude to those who make our freelance lifestyle possible.
It can be all too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of running a business and forget about small things like sharing our appreciation for our clients. Without our clients, we’d be out of business. So let’s show them how grateful we are for their continued support with these four ways to say thanks.
Promote Their Business
It’s always nice when someone gives you a shout out on social media or their website, right? A mention of your client’s business every once a while will be totally appreciated, and is a nice way to show your gratitude and support. Endorse them on LinkedIn or tweet about their new launch. An easy way to continually show your support is by making a twitter list of your clients so you can easily check in and retweet their news. It’s a simple gesture, but it shows that you value them and their business.
Offer a Referral Program
The best way for freelancers to get new clients is by word-of-mouth, so encourage that kind of behaviour with a referral program. When a client sends business your way, you best be sending a thank you back! Let your client know how much you appreciate the nod and the support. You can step up your display of appreciation by sending a handwritten thank you card with a gift card enclosed, or offer them a discount on future services. Whatever your referral program is, make sure your client knows how much you appreciate it.
Send a Gift
Put together a small, thoughtful gift for clients and include a note in the card that tells them you appreciate their business. Check out my Holiday Gift Guide post for suggestions on who to send gifts to and what to get them this Christmas.
Just Say It
Every once in a while, just tell your clients thanks! On your next call, say thanks. In your next email, say thanks. On your next invoice, say thanks. Sometimes we need to remember that our clients keep our businesses running, and it’s nice to let them know that we appreciate that.
Thank You!
And thanks to you, dear reader, for visiting my blog, sharing my posts, and saying hi on twitter. Not to get all cheesy on you guys, but your support means the world and I am truly grateful for it.
